DOI: 10.1093/oso/9780198779841.003.0024 et al. (1989) describes many of these species and their associations with S. purpurea; since 1989, over 200 papers have been published on S. purpurea or its inhabitants, including studies of interactions among different inquilines; local and biogeographic patterns in inquiline community structure; and studies of their genetic and evolutionary processes. The S. purpurea inquiline community has become a model experimental system for studying contemporary questions in ecology and evolution ( Srivastava et al. 2004). In this chapter, we review how studies of Sarracenia inquilines have answered fundamental questions in ecology and evolution. Much of the work focuses on Sarracenia purpurea, but where appropriate we will discuss studies using other Sarracenia species.

Convergence in Multispecies Interactions.
The concepts of convergent evolution and community convergence highlight how selective pressures can shape unrelated organisms or communities in similar ways. We propose a related concept, convergent interactions, to describe the independent evolution of multispecies interactions with similar physiological or ecological functions. A focus on convergent interactions clarifies how natural selecti...
متن کاملDo ecological communities disperse across biogeographic barriers as a unit?
Biogeographic barriers have long been implicated as drivers of biological diversification, but how these barriers influence co-occurring taxa can vary depending on factors intrinsic to the organism and in their relationships with other species. Due to the interdependence among taxa, ecological communities present a compelling opportunity to explore how interactions among species may lead to a s...
متن کاملEmerging model systems in eco-evo-devo: the environmentally responsive spadefoot toad.
Spadefoot toads have emerged as a model system for addressing fundamental questions in ecological and evolutionary developmental biology (eco-evo-devo). Their tadpoles produce a wide range of adaptive phenotypes in direct response to diverse environmental stimuli. Such phenotypic plasticity offers an excellent opportunity to examine how an organism's ecology affects its development as well as h...
متن کاملFocusing the metaphor: plant root foraging behaviour.
Many authors assert that plants exhibit complex behaviours which are analogous to animal behaviour. However, plant ecologists rarely root these studies in a conceptual foundation as fertile as that used by animal behaviourists. Here we adapt the optimality principles that facilitated numerous advances in the study of animal foraging behaviour to create one possible framework for plant foraging ...
متن کاملMarine-terrestrial contrasts in the ecology of plant chemical defenses against herbivores.
Small marine herbivores that live on the plants they consume often selectively eat seaweeds that are chemically defended from fishes. Their feeding is unaffected or stimulated by the plant metabolites that deter fishes, and these small herbivores dramatically reduce their susceptibility to predation by associating with host plants that are noxious to fishes. Ecological similarities between thes...
